Full Day Schedule

Morning Schedule

9:30-9:45 OPENING EXERCISES Pledge, song, discussion of "memory gem."
9:45-10:05 HANDWRITING Group activity, copy memory gem in the Copy Book, writing drills.
10:05-10:30 GRAMMAR & SPELLING McGuffey’s Spelling Book.
10:30-10:45 RECESS Introduction to Outhouse.
10:45-11:15 READING Assign three levels in the McGuffey Readers, role play various ages.
11:15-11:30 GEOGRAPHY/HISTORY Include history of Sholes School and its placement in Kane County now and prior to the move.
11:30-12:30 LUNCH & ORGANIZED GAMES Outside, weather permitting.

Afternoon Schedule

12:30-12:40 STORYTIME  
12:40-1:10 ARITHMETIC Board work, slate work, drills.
1:10-1:45 MEMORY WORK Recite a previously-assigned poem.
1:45-2:00 SUMMARY & CLEAN UP A Journal-writing type activity is suggested here.  Writing can be added to the Copy Book.

Half-Day Schedule

9:20 OPENING EXERCISES 10 minutes
to ARITHMETIC 30 minutes
10:30 HANDWRITING 10 minutes
  HISTORY 20 minutes  (use the history cassette, if desired)
10:30-11:00 RECESS Introduction to outhouse, informal discussionof content presented in the history tape recording.
11:00-12:00 READING 30-40 minutes--Use McGuffey’s Readers
  SPELLING BEE 20-30 minutes
12:00-1:00 LUNCH Begin lunch at the School, follow with organized old-time games or spend time at the picnic facilities provided by the Forest Preserve.

These schedules are provided only as guides for teachers.  Visiting teachers are always welcome to develop their own plans for a day at Sholes School.
